Nick started his career in the law in the 1980’s and, like Carl, with their shared love of business development, headed straight for London to gain top quality experience.
British design, corporate identity, advertising and branding really came into its own as top in the world at this time and Nick found himself working at the very top of this world, for example being part of the team repositioning and establishing Guinness as a top international brand through the £20m Pure Genius campaign.
He also worked on establishing the first major alcohol free lager ‘Kaliber’ and other significant brands such as Bells whiskey, Gleneagles Hotel and Champneys health spa.
After that Nick spent five years as the sole in house lawyer, working with the group board of directors, with food and drink conglomerate Ranks Hovis McDougall-the first company in the UK to value its brands on its balance sheet separately from goodwill (thus increasing its over all value and borrowing power) with famous brands such as Hovis, Mr Kipling, Just Juice and Bisto.
The lawyer’s work always needed to be geared to protecting the commercial value and so his understanding of this field developed further.
